Why Host an Objectivist Lecture?

An Objectivist lecture on campus has more impact than any other single event an Objectivist club can host. Here’s what your club can accomplish by hosting a lecture:

Bring rational ideas to campus. Objectivist intellectuals often argue for positions that are completely unrepresented in academia or the media. Only Objectivists understand the moral case for capitalism. Only Objectivists know the full, philosophic case for science and reason against intelligent design and religion. Only Objectivists have the courage to outline the full strategy needed to win the war against militant Islam. Help balance the debate on your campus by bringing an Objectivist expert.
Promote Objectivism on campus and the wider community. In addition to taking unique stands on controversial issues of the day, most Objectivist lectures are opportunities to spread awareness of core Objectivist ideas. Not only do the speeches themselves show the relevance of Objectivism by applying its core principles to current events and timeless questions, but Q&A sessions give students the chance to ask general questions about Objectivism. The events also offer the opportunity to distribute Objectivist pamphlets and mention the Ayn Rand Institute.
Promote your club. Don’t treat your lecture as an isolated event. A well-planned event should dovetail with the purpose of your club: to study Objectivism by creating a culture of intellectual camaraderie among an expanding membership. Students who hear an interesting idea at an Objectivist event may or may not follow up by reading Ayn Rand's novels. But students who hear of the chance to attend a meeting with other intellectually curious people may do so just to hear more about Objectivism and to ask further questions. If students encounter a benevolent, intellectually serious atmosphere in the club, they will be even more likely to read Ayn Rand. Attracting intellectually curious attendees to your regular meetings should be a central motivation for hosting lectures.
Develop your organizing and publicity skills. Learning how to plan a major public event is a skill that translates to more than just campus activism. It familiarizes you with the higher education bureaucracy and with the campus and local media. It hones your skills at writing press releases, designing posters, and organizing large groups of people.

Planning a lecture involves time and hard work. However, it is very fulfilling to see hundreds of students in an auditorium, there to listen to ideas you care about, because of the work you did to bring them there. The fulfillment is even greater when you use the event to promote your club and improve the intellectual atmosphere on your campus.
