Pre-made Meeting Plans To Help Discussions

OCN has a new project to help preparation for a key part of any campus Objectivist club: philosophic discussion meetings. The best way to learn about Objectivism is to study Ayn Rand's writings, so we have assembled a reading list of her works. We have also begun to prepare meeting plans for these readings to simplify your preparation.

Advantages of this program include:

The reading list is drawn entirely from a single book (The Ayn Rand Reader) and other online sources, so anyone can participate in discussions without having to purchase a variety of books.
The meeting plans include both high-level outlines of the readings and discussion questions. The outlines can help participants review the reading done before the meeting, or help structure discussion if you do the reading in the meeting. The discussion questions help focus discussion on the most important parts of the text, and encourage members to understand Rand's meaning before evaluating it.
The list features a unique ordering of discussion topics, beginning with "Philosophy: Who Needs It," proceeding to ethical topics, then delving into select topics in metaphysics, epistemology, and questions about human nature, and finally considering politics and culture. This grabs participants' attention with familiar topics related to everyday life (and to Ayn Rand's fiction), then gives them a sense of the deeper philosophic roots of these topics, and then returns to practical applications of global, life-and-death significance.
The list also features links to audio and video versions of Ayn Rand's own presentations or discussions of many of her articles on our list. This makes it easier for students to "read" the essays in advance of discussion and offers clubs the chance to turn a group reading into a group listening or viewing session.
The list and meeting plans will also be the central focus of the OCN's new "Virtual Objectivist Club," an online weekly live discussion group. The VOC is intended for students who don’t have a campus club; however, club leaders are encouraged to join VOC discussions or listen to the recordings, in order to prepare for upcoming discussions or to share the insights they learned from past discussions.
We recommend a particular order of readings, but you are free to use as many or as few of our meeting plans as you wish, as they become available, in any order you like. You may want to do only reading discussion groups, or a variety of types of meetings, or whatever you find interests your membership the most. We ask only for an email address in return by which we can contact you to solicit feedback about the plans.
The OCN team has spent a significant amount of time drafting and editing these meeting plans, but they are not set in stone. We look forward to hearing about your experience using them, and hope your suggestions will help us improve them.

We hope you will join other clubs across the country in making the study of Ayn Rand's writings a central activity of Objectivist campus clubs, and that this common purpose will help solidify connections between the nation's existing clubs and help create more.
